Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is also known for being the home of the Living Goddess (Kumari). Pokhara symbolizes Nepal’s natural beauty, offering magnificent mountain views. Chitwan is Nepal’s top destination for wildlife activities, and Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a global symbol of peace.
Together, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and Lumbini offer a wonderful opportunity to explore four of Nepal’s most important and diverse destinations — the naturally beautiful Pokhara, the wildlife-rich Chitwan, and the sacred Lumbini.
Kathmandu is historically significant and culturally rich. Known as the “City of Temples,” it is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. UNESCO declared Kathmandu a World Heritage Site in 1979.
Around the Kathmandu Valley, you will visit many historical and pilgrimage sites including Pashupatinath (the holy temple of Hindus), Boudhanath (the largest stupa in Southeast Asia), Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Kathmandu Durbar Square (Old Royal Palace and the home of the Living Goddess), Patan Durbar Square, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square — all renowned for their history, art, and architecture.
After exploring Kathmandu, you will drive to Pokhara, 200 km west of the capital. This beautiful city is surrounded by mountains to the north, dotted with clean and wide lakes, lush forests, and warm, friendly locals who make your holiday even more meaningful. Pokhara is the only place in the world where you can enjoy the view of the Himalayas above 8,000 meters while sitting at an elevation below 1,000 meters.
Major attractions in Pokhara include Phewa Lake, Begnas Lake, Mahendra Cave, Seti River Gorge, Barahi Temple, the International Mountain Museum, the World Peace Pagoda, and Sarangkot — a famous viewpoint for sunrise and Himalayan views, and also the starting point for paragliding. Pokhara is also well known for outdoor adventure activities such as paragliding, ultralight flights, boating, mountain biking, and rafting.
After exploring the lakes and mountains in Pokhara, you will head to Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first and most renowned national park. Here, you can enjoy elephant rides, jungle walks, jeep safaris, bird-watching, canoe rides on the Rapti River, and a cultural show featuring the Tharu community. Chitwan is home to many rare wildlife species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, marsh muggers, gharials, wild boars, and more than 468 species of birds.
From Chitwan, you will travel to Lumbini, located in the southwestern part of Nepal near the foothills of the Churia Range. Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the apostle of peace and “Light of Asia,” born in 623 B.C. Lumbini evokes a deep sense of devotion among millions of Buddhists worldwide, similar to how Jerusalem is regarded by Christians and Mecca by Muslims. Described as a beautiful garden during Buddha’s time, Lumbini still retains its legendary charm and spiritual ambiance. For centuries, Buddhists around the world knew that the birthplace of Lord Buddha was somewhere in this region.
Descriptions from the ancient Chinese pilgrims Huian Tsang and Fa-Hien mentioned this sacred area, saying, “Where the Lord was born is a piece of heaven on earth,” where one can see snowy mountains beyond a splendid garden adorned with stupas and monasteries.
