Kathmandu—an open-air museum of famous sites, ancient temples and shrines, pagodas, and inspiring deities—is a city of immense historical, artistic, and cultural importance. Several beautiful villages and towns surrounding the valley offer ideal destinations for day trips.
Art and architecture blend seamlessly here, with temples and palaces decorated with intricately carved windows, delicately engraved stone and metal images, and artistically designed roofs.
Located at the center of some of the world’s greatest mountains, Kathmandu Valley hosts an extraordinary collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur; the two most important stupas, Swoyambhunath and Boudhanath; and the two revered Hindu shrines, Pashupatinath and Changunarayan. The valley is vibrant, spiritually rich, and steeped in centuries of tradition.
Kathmandu Valley consists of three major cities: Kathmandu (the capital of Nepal), Patan (also known as Lalitpur, or the “City of Fine Arts”), and Bhaktapur (also known as Bhadgaon, renowned for its well-preserved temples, monuments, craftsmen, and artisans). These places are often described as an “Open-Air Museum” of medieval art and architecture.
Nagarkot:
Nagarkot, located 32 kilometers east of Kathmandu, is one of the most scenic destinations in the Bhaktapur District. It is renowned for its spectacular sunrise views over the Himalayas on clear mornings. Many visitors travel from Kathmandu to spend the night in Nagarkot to witness the breathtaking sunrise. The town has become famous as one of the best viewpoints for Mount Everest as well as other snow-capped peaks of the eastern Himalayan range.
It also offers stunning views of the Indrawati River Valley to the east. Situated at an elevation of 2,195 meters, Nagarkot provides a panoramic view of the valley and is described by travelers as a place whose beauty can be enjoyed year-round.
