In this Kathmandu–Lumbini Buddhist Tour, we aim to help you explore major Buddhist monasteries of Nepal, including Lumbini—the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The places and names of the monasteries listed in the itinerary are truly majestic and culturally significant, internationally known for their historical and spiritual value. Just as the introduction of Lumbini has been highlighted and explained as clearly as possible, the history and importance of other places—such as Namobuddha, Kapan Monastery, Narayanthan Monastery, Buddha Monastery in Pharping, and many others not mentioned here—are equally well known among Buddhists worldwide.
Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a small town in the southern Terai of Nepal, where the ruins of the ancient city are still visible. At the age of 84, Lord Buddha left this world, leaving behind thousands of followers to preserve and spread Buddhism.
Lumbini has long been a sacred destination for Buddhists around the world. The restored garden and surroundings contain the remains of numerous ancient stupas and monasteries. A large stone pillar erected by the Indian Emperor Ashoka in 250 BC bears an inscription marking the birthplace of the Buddha. The most significant part of Lumbini is the Maya Devi Temple, which houses a stone image of Queen Maya Devi giving birth to Lord Buddha while holding onto a tree branch.
This Buddhist tour starts and ends in Kathmandu; however, if you are an Indian traveler, your tour can also begin from Lumbini and end in Kathmandu. If you arrive overland through the Sunauli border, our representatives will be there to receive you and escort you to your hotel for the next day’s sightseeing around Lumbini before continuing to Kathmandu to complete the remaining itinerary.
An important archaeological site near Lumbini is Kapilvastu, the ancient palace area where Lord Buddha spent his early years. It is a major highlight of this Buddhist tour. Scattered palace foundations can still be found, and archaeologists have identified 13 successive layers of human settlement dating back to the 8th century BC. Access is convenient, as Siddhartha Highway connects Lumbini by road to Pokhara, Tansen, and Kathmandu.

DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel
Meet our airport representative at Kathmandu Airport to begin your Buddhist pilgrimage tour in Nepal. Our staff will escort you to your hotel.
Day 02: Visiting Buddhist Monasteries within the Valley
After breakfast, drive to Boudha to visit the Boudhanath Stupa—one of Nepal’s largest and oldest Buddhist sites. Here, you will see Tibetan communities engaging in business and performing kora. Inside Boudha, you will find hundreds of monasteries; we will visit several depending on your available time.
Next, we drive to Kapan Monastery, located on a hill and known as Kapan Viewpoint for its panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley. Afterward, we proceed to Pharping Monastery, located about 10 km from the city. It is a peaceful, scenic place with a truly panoramic environment.
Day 03: Kathmandu to Namobuddha, 3–4 Hours Exploration, Then Drive to Dhulikhel
Namobuddha is one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists. Located about 45 km from Kathmandu and surrounded by dense green forests, it is a peaceful spiritual destination. The drive takes roughly 2 hours. You can easily spend 3–4 hours exploring its serene surroundings and beautiful monastery. After the visit, we drive to Dhulikhel to enjoy the evening views and sunset.
Day 04: Dhulikhel – Drive Back to Kathmandu & Visit Swayambhunath & Narayanthan Monastery
After breakfast in Dhulikhel, we return to the hotel in Kathmandu, freshen up, and drive to Budhanilkantha to visit the Narayanthan (Sang) Monastery. Located about 10 km away, the area is peaceful and requires a short walk from the vehicle. After spending around 2 hours here, we return to the city for lunch and then visit Swayambhunath Temple—an important Buddhist and Hindu holy site. Swayambhunath occupies a large area and offers panoramic views after a meaningful cultural walk. Afterward, return to the hotel.
Day 05: Kathmandu to Lumbini – Overnight in Lumbini
As mentioned earlier, Lumbini holds immense spiritual significance as the birthplace of Lord Buddha. There are two travel options:
By air: Fly to Bhairawa and then take a short drive.
By road: A 12–13 hour journey.
We recommend flying or using a private vehicle. If you fly, sightseeing can begin on the same day; if traveling by road, you proceed directly to the hotel.
Day 06: Sightseeing Tour Around Holy Lumbini
Early morning, experience the daily activities performed by Buddhist monks (Lamas), including puja, meditation, and rituals symbolizing peace and compassion. Visit Buddha’s birthplace area, prayer spots, lakes, Ashoka’s Pillar, and other historical remnants. If you wish, you may also participate in meditation retreats—but booking is required.
Day 07: Lumbini to Kathmandu
After breakfast, return to Kathmandu either by driving or flying from Bhairawa. If you choose to fly, you may still visit some remaining monasteries in Kathmandu. Otherwise, check into the hotel and rest.
Day 08: Leisure Day in Kathmandu
This day is free for shopping, casual sightseeing, rest at the hotel, or exploring the city on your own. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Nepali dinner with cultural performances.
Day 09: Final Departure
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
