Langtang Valley lies north of Kathmandu and is adjacent to Tibet in the north. It is surrounded by high peaks of great appeal and has become famous worldwide as a trekking region due to its wonderful scenery. The Langtang Valley is aptly called “the valley of glaciers.” Here, mountains rise sharply toward the sky. The valley offers pine forests, swift mountain streams, rugged rocks and snow-capped peaks, along with diverse flora and fauna. Likewise, the hospitality offered by the ethnic Tamang community is exceptional.
British mountaineer Bill Tilman described it as the most beautiful valley in the world. The highest peak in this area is Shisapangma or Gosaithan (8027 m) in Tibet. The route from the Langtang Valley to Gosaikund is full of diversity and attracts many tourists. The Langtang Valley is also known as the treasure house of alpine plants. The entire valley is covered with flowers during the summer. This high and isolated region is inhabited by Tamangs whose religious practices, language, and dress are much more similar to Tibetans.

DETAIL ITINERARY
Day 01: Kathmandu (1300 m) – Dhunche (1966 m)
Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (1966 m), which takes about eight hours. You head north out of Kathmandu, driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas. The first part of the drive up to Trishuli Bazaar is quite smooth, after which the road becomes gravel. During the rainy season, landslides may occasionally block the way. The drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche can be done by local bus or a land cruiser.
Day 02: Dhunche to Syabru Gaun (2581 m)
Trek from Dhunche to Syabru Gaun, which takes about five and a half hours. Today’s walk is leisurely through forests and terraced hill slopes. As you enter Syabru, you descend to the ridgeline separating the Langtang Khola from the Trishuli River. Syabru is a beautiful village stretched along the ridgeline. You continue through the village to your campsite about fifteen minutes below. The sunset is spectacular, brilliantly backlighting the houses above. From here, you can enjoy views of Langtang Lirung (7245 m), the Tibetan Himalaya ranges, and more.
Day 03: Syabru Gaun to Lama Hotel (2470 m)
Trek from Syabru Gaun to Lama Hotel, taking about five hours. The trail descends along Syabru’s main street before dropping to the Ghopche Khola (2050 m) and then to Landslide (1810 m). Afterwards, the trail ascends gently to Rimche (2400 m) through Bamboo (1960 m), and finally levels out to Lama Hotel. You may see red pandas, monkeys, or even bears if you are lucky. Several lodges and shops here provide basic supplies.
Day 04: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3430 m)
Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village via Ghore Tabela, which takes about six hours. As you climb, you may catch glimpses of Langtang Lirung between the trees. At Ghora Tabela (3000 m), the trail emerges from the forest. You may see white monkeys and local birds. A former Tibetan resettlement project once existed here, but now it is a Nepalese army post with no permanent residents. The trail climbs gently as the valley widens, passing temporary summer herder settlements.
Shortly before the village, you can visit a small monastery. Langtang village, the headquarters of Langtang National Park, has traditional flat-roofed Tibetan-style houses surrounded by stone-walled fields of buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, and barley.
Day 05: Langtang Village to Kyanjin (3870 m)
Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin, which takes about three hours. The trail climbs gradually through small villages and yak pastures as the valley opens out and views expand.
After crossing streams and moraines, you reach Kyanjin, home to a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory. You arrive by lunchtime with time to acclimatise and explore. The setting is dramatic, with snow-covered peaks in all directions, including Dorje Larpa (6990 m), Langtang Ri (6370 m), and Langtang Lirung (7245 m).
Day 06: Rest Day
Explore the area around Kyanjin Gompa. You may visit the monastery and cheese factory, walk up the moraine to view the spectacular ice faces and glaciers of Langtang Lirung, or ascend Kyanjin Ri (4350 m) for a breathtaking panorama of the Langtang range.
Day 07: Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel
Trek from Kyanjin Gompa back to Lama Hotel, taking about six hours. You retrace your steps along the Langtang Khola through Langtang Village and Ghora Tabela, then continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel.
Day 08: Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi
Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi via Sherpa Gaon, taking about five hours. The upper trail provides wider mountain and green hill views.
This route is broader and sunnier, passing through several Sherpa and Tamang villages. The first half descends gradually, followed by a steep descent to Syabru Besi (1600 m). A project called the Chilime Power Plant once operated here. The main inhabitants are from the Tamang community and follow a Tibetan-influenced lifestyle.
Day 09: Syabrubesi to Kathmandu
Drive from Syabru Besi to Kathmandu by bus, which takes about nine hours.
