The obvious approach to this peak diverges from the main trail to the Thorong La Pass past the village of Manang, and Base Camp is established in a small valley to the north. From Base Camp, the route follows a subsidiary northwest ridge that leads up to the main peak.

An attempt to the peak and return can be done in a single day, as setting up camp on the slope above Base Camp is not easy.

This route also allows an attempt at Chulu Central Peak (6,429m/21,060ft), located just east of Chulu West.

Chulu Peak lies in the Annapurna trekking area. The highest of these peaks, marked as Chulu West (6,419m/21,054ft) on trekking maps, has been recorded by several expeditions to be closer to 6,400m (20,997ft), and may more accurately be called Chulu Central.

As a result, many climbing parties have mistakenly climbed one of these peaks, thinking it to be Chulu East or West. It is generally understood that with a permit to climb either the East or West peak, an attempt can also be made on the nearby peak.

A climb of one or both of these peaks, combined with Nepal’s famous Annapurna Circuit trek, creates one of the most spectacular Himalayan trekking and climbing adventures.

Chulu West lies to the north of the Annapurna range. This trek is strenuous. You need a strong sense of adventure and the willingness to walk 8 to 9 hours a day, often at high altitude. Good physical condition and stamina are essential.

A basic knowledge of mountain climbing is an advantage, although our experienced Sherpa guides will accompany and lead you safely to the top. From the summit of Chulu West, you can enjoy excellent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna, and many more Himalayan giants.
